BROOKS B17 TITANIUM: I've found a fitting problem... can any of you guys help me out here with some advice?

I desperately want to fit this saddle to my 'Look' roadbike, with its 25.00 fit (USE suspension) seatpost. However, I cannot move the saddle back far enough, due to the design of the chassis rails, which narrow at the front.

I've been told I need a "laid-back" seatpost design. Anyone do one in 25.00 fit? They all seem to be 27.2 etc today.

If I were you I'd use only Proofide. I bought another Brooks B17 and it's a bit bouncier than the one illustrated here. The Flexalan soaking described above has deadened the saddle a little (less bounce) compared to the second Proofided one.

I have a swift, and love it, but after applying proofide on it for months and riding it almost everyday (commuter) I need a b17. The swift is a little too narrow for my sit bones. With the b17 I think I am going to apply neetsfoot oil to the underside before one long ride after I get the proper saddle position. Then I will leave it alone and just use proofide again.
So, the b17 is on it's way, and I am excited. The swift has been great, but need something a little wider.

I think it's trial and error as to whether the saddle fits your anatomy. Your sit bones should be on the centres of the triangles where the saddle is widest and create soft spots in the leather. The B17 standard is a bit wider than the Team Pro so it may offer more comfort. On longer rides I use Assos Creme (or similar) in padded shorts.

I have had a Brooks Team Pro saddle since August last year and although I have done over 1.200 miles it is still not very comfortable and left me a bit sore after a 100km ride at the weekend. No chaffing - just tender on the sit-bones. I have only ever used Proofide. Is it time to go for Neatsfoot oil (or something similar) or should I get a B17?

Thought you might like to look at my old Brooks B17. It dates from the 1950's. I got it on a secondhand BSA Golden Wings in 1963 when I was 15. It's now tearing across the back, I've taped it up and wedged some wood underneath but it's not going to last. I've travelled 1000's of miles on it, perhaps if I'd had it from new "it would have lasted a lifetime". Now I'll have to buy another.

I'm onto my third B17 (honey color) and yes it is hard but I'll live with that as time goes by and if you keep the proofride up to it, it will be waterproof and always feel supple. Don't let the leather dry out, that is akin to throwing money away. I have a flyer which I use on long distances over some really bad roads and fully loaded touring.

Lucky enough to have a bike fitted with the B17 and another with the Flyer model I would certainly say that the B17 saddle is the better choice for touring. My experience with the Flyer is that it is a wonderful saddle for an MTB - no need for suspension at all IMO - but that the B17 is a far better saddle for riding long distances as the rear portion is wider. Also, I have noticed that it is possible to 'excite' the Flyer's spings into some sort of sympathetic vibration. If you pedal at just the right cadence, the movement of your body seems to set the saddle bouncing. Perhaps I also should add that my B17 is well over twenty years old and the Flyer about fifteen.

The bicycle shown above isn't mine, so I can't comment first-hand on the Brooks Flyer, but I've heard that the springs can be a nuisance, bouncing up and down too much, and it weighs more. I believe the B17 is much more popular as a touring saddle. Mine is now very comfortable.

Nice personal review of it. I've heard nothing but good about the Brooks saddles, especially from a touring standpoint. I'm just beginning to get into bicycle touring myself and I have an opportunity to get a Brooks saddle for ridiculously cheap. I wonder, since you seem to have ridden both, would you recommend the classic B17 or the sprung version (Flyer)?
